There are several ways that you can promote yourself so
that the right people will "discover" you. Following are some suggestions to
help you get the administrative assistant job that you
want. You should definitely consider working through a temp agency, just to get
your foot in the door. You may feel discouraged at the thought of a temporary
job rather than a full-time one, but if you are already temping for the agency
when they open a position up, you will already be there and they already know
your work ethic.
Most administrative
assistant jobs will have the skills needed listed on the job
listing. Once you have found a few jobs that interest you and that you are
qualified for, you should prepare the materials that you will be sending to the
companies. Many people use basic form letters and the same resume for every job
they apply for. This is unwise. Computer programs make it so easy for you to
tweak these materials so that they can be individually aimed at one specific
agency. However you choose to do it, you should send each company you are
applying to a resume and references with a cover letter. Take the time to use
references that are pertinent to the job you are looking at.
If you have done all of these
things, but are still having no luck, you might want to develop a long-term plan
to improve your employability. Take on some additional responsibilities at
school or the job you currently have. If you aren't in school, consider going
back to school to help you get the skills you need.
